At St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Community, Children's preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist is primarly a parent-taught program. Children are prepared through family-centered formation programs which include several meetings at the parish to orient and prepare both children and parents for the celebration of these sacraments.
Baptized children, who are in 1st grade or above, who wish to celebrate one or both of the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The typical particpant participates in preparation year 1 in the 1st grade, and year 2 in the 2nd grade - when they also receive the Sacraments. The child must be older than 7 at the time of receiving the sacrament.
In addition to partipcation in an age-specific formation program, to prepare for the sacraments parent(s) and candidates gather at the parish for at least two sessions. These sessions include worship, formation, and to celebrate a special rite. The preparation concludes with reception of the sacraments. We ask that at least one parent attend with the candidate at all gatherings. Contact us for our current schedule.
Yes, if a family has attend another formation program the first year outside of St. Gabriel, please provide a written statement from the parish confirming your child’s participation. Call the Children's Ministry Director to discuss your situation.
We recognize the baptisms of other Christian faiths when baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and with water. Before receiving the Rite of Reconciliation and Eucharist, our pastor would invite the child to make a profession of faith. This is similar to the questions asked of the community during a baptism and the renwal of our baptismal promises we sometimes say at Mass. The Profession of Faith is recorded in our Record of Sacrament book for Eucharist.
