As anyone using hearing aids can attest, hearing aids amplify ALL sound reaching the microphones of their hearing aids, not just the spoken words. In large venues, such as churches, auditoriums, and football stadiums, sound from loudspeakers often echoes off the walls – what the hearing aid user experiences is a veritable cacophony!
St. Gabriel’s has a hearing assistance system connected to the church’s sound system. It transmits a radio signal into the church. A limited amount of hearing assistance equipment is available for use during Mass. Feedback about the sound fidelity when using this equipment? “It’s as if the speaker was standing next to you!”
So if you have trouble hearing the spoken words of priests or lectors, we invite you to take advantage of one of the solutions described here.
A special battery-powered receiver with an ear-speaker can help the hard of hearing to better recognize the spoken words. It’s like wearing a hearing aid where only the speaker’s voice is amplified.
A neck-loop connected to the receiver converts radio signals to a magnetic field. A T-coil in your hearing aids or cochlear implant converts magnetic signals to sound signals.
In the Narthex before Mass, contact a member of the Welcome Ministry Team about the availability of Hearing Assistance equipment for your specific situation (see above and table below.) If available, it will be issued after you provide your name and contact information. The Team member will show you how the equipment can be worn as unobtrusively as possible. The neck loop can be worn outside or under a shirt/blouse.
After Mass, please clean equipment with the supplied alcohol prep pad and return it to a member of the team.

A telecoil or “T-coil”, is included in many hearing aids and all cochlear implants. If your hearing aids don’t include a T-coil, ask your audiologist to include one the next time you update your hearing aids. Many models and styles of hearing aids and all cochlear implants can be fitted with T-coils. T-coils can sometimes be added to your current hearing aid.
