Whole Family Formation (WFF) is St. Gabriel's model for passing on the Catholic faith to
children in grades K-5 in which parents play the foundational role in forming their children.
Whole Family Formation is a model of catechesis (passing on of the Catholic faith) in which parents play the prominent role in the formation of their children.
Our program empowers parents with tools and resources to build confidence in their ability to pass on the Catholic faith while also discovering it for themselves.
St. Gabriel offers two pathways for WFF Families to choose from and provides all curriculum materials necessary for your family to be successful. Read more about the pathways below.
WFF is designed for families with children in grades K-5 and runs from September - April.
We live in a society where children and families are influenced by a number of things: peers, social media, school, news, politics, advertising, but...
While there are many outside influences, the Church recognizes that parents are the first and primary influencers of their children. Through our Whole Family Formation program, parents are given the opportunity to have meaningful, faith-centered conversations that don't just teach the facts but also the experience of living and sharing it with the most important people in their lives: their children. Participating in WFF not only lays the foundation for a life of discipleship for their children, but parents also become disciples themselves, growing ever closer to the heart of God.
"Parents should, by their word and example, be the first teachers of the faith to their children."
(Lumen Gentium 11)
Groups of families connect together on a weekly basis (either at St. Gabriel's or in private homes) to share in the teaching of our faith. These weekly gatherings typically meet before or after the weekend Masses and are designed to engage the whole family while forming long-lasting connections to each other and to the parish. Connect Family Leaders coordinate schedules and facilitate group gatherings.
Expectations of Connect Families include:
Parents are empowered with appropriate resources to teach and guide their children through the faith. Weekly at-home lessons provided by staff assist parents in modeling the faith and passing along the traditions of the church while growing deeper in relationship with Jesus and one another. Our hope is that these lessons offer an encounter with Jesus that compels the desire to share Him with the surrounding community.
Expectations of Individual Family include:
Our parish was founded on this model of Whole Family catechesis over twenty-five years ago by our founding pastor, Bishop Greg Kelly. Our hope is that this program offers you and your family the opportunity to encounter Jesus and compels your desire to share Him and the many gifts attained through God’s grace with the surrounding community.
We encourage our families to choose the Connect Family pathway because it engages the whole family while forming long-lasting connections to each other and to the parish. However, we understand that some families cannot commit to weekly gatherings and therefore have the option to choose the Individual Family pathway and the flexibility it offers.
WFF runs from September to April each year. We kick off with our Parent Orientation meeting in September.
Program requirements include weekly lessons and monthly challenges. We use the Word of Life curriculum by Augustine Institute for our weekly lessons. Children are given age-appropriate workbooks and parents have access to online content including digital texts, catechist manuals, enhancement videos, and adult formation opportunities. Monthly challenges are assigned based on our yearly focus and include active participation in parish life and personal family reflection responses. Families are given all curriculum materials and information at our September Parent Orientation.
Each WFF lesson typically takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. Connect Families generally gather for an hour.
We ask that all missed lessons are made up within two weeks of the assigned date. You will do the lesson on your own with your child(ren) and submit an assessment through the Word of Life portal.
Sacramental Preparation requires two consecutive years of formation. Refer to our Sacraments for Children and Youth Diagram for more details.
Your child will be registered in WFF for two consecutive years. In year two, they will be concurrently enrolled in the Sacramental Prep program.
Please note** Children's Liturgy of the Word is not an approved formation program for Sacrament Preparation.
We offer a fellowship program called Reach Kids for children in 3rd-5th grade. Reach Kids meets Tuesday nights during the school year. Registration in WFF includes participation in Reach at no additional cost. Children must also be registered in Reach Kids to participate. Click HERE for more details and to register.
